Mid- month musings: Bridget Jones, Pink Pony Club and dating Cynthia Erivo
Your mid-month edit for the month of love
Hi, Hello!!
Welcome to the second edition of monthly musings! I can’t believe we’re almost halfway through February. I hope everyone is feeling a lot more inspired and energised this month.
Today I’m writing to you from my surprisingly sparse tube carriage through my notes app and cold fingers. There’s currently a man sitting opposite me reading the Christmas edition of The Economist, and he’s marking his progress with a tasseled purple bookmark. I can’t help but think I’ve been reading my magazines wrong all this time??
Anyway, my loyal readers seemed to love my last mid-month edit almost as much as I loved writing it, so I’m back with another wildly random curation of late January/ early February favourites.
📺 Watching:
In honour of Valentine’s Day, I’ve been rewatching some of my favourite modern romcoms, including Anyone but You and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. I still stand by the fact that Jenny Han is the queen of contemporary romance, meanwhile, Unwritten hasn’t stuck in my head as much this time around.
90210: I’m always searching for a 24-episode, 6-9 season teen drama, and 90210 is the latest series to curb my cravings. I can’t comment on the reboot aspect since I never watched the original Beverly Hills, 90210, but if you’re in the mood for drama, character development, and friend-scest, I highly recommend.
I’m also very excited to binge the series finale of Cobra Kai, which drops on Netflix today
📚 Reading:
I still have around 50 pages left of Magnolia Parks, which I mentioned I was reading in my last post. And while I’ve had an extremely slow reading month in the novel sense, that hasn’t stopped me from enjoying loads of your Substack posts. Here are some of my favourites:
❤️ February obsessions:
Macaulay Culkin and Brenda Song for Cosmo: This relationship is the ultimate love-child of a ’90s and ’00s kid, and I’ll never get over this unlikely crossover. The execution of the shoot is pure genius—especially the cheeky nod to John and Yoko—and I can’t believe these nostalgic lovebirds weren’t cover stars sooner. Yet another reason why I love Cosmo.
Chicken shop date with Cynthia Erivo: the mix of personalities in this episode is everything to me.
This Bridget Jones billboard in London:
Pink Pony Club: if Pink Pony Club (the Grammys version) hasn’t been in your head for the last week, what are you doing? The symphony of so many artists singing the chorus was angelic.
New Jellycats: it’s almost impossible to pick a top three from this new collection, but my personal favourites are: the mozzarella, the madeleine and the ravioli amusables.
Daydream matcha: anything Blank Street is a yes from me, so when I saw the latest drink special, I had to try it. It’s not too sweet and tasted like a toned down version of Mel’s Maple matcha which I LOVED at the time.
‘My Mom styling me’: this TikTok series by Ella Mendelsohn is the reason I still open the app. I love swooning over her classy looks, vintage pieces and her mum’s 25 years of styling experience
All things Valentines Day: call it cliche, but I can’t help but go crazy for the February Valentines displays and limited edition heart products. Diptyque, Le Creuset and Missoma are thriving with their collections this year. If you need some gifting inspo, Lucy from Add to Shopping Cart offers some great ideas.
Allison: from her handmade pottery to her spreads of colourful veggies and omelette, Allison is another creator who’s stolen my heart (and screen time). I love the calm in her videos, as well as her perfectly balanced lunches
Bette Davis Eyes cover by Taylor Swift: I recently discovered the Speak Now World Tour album on Spotify, which is over a decade old but full of forgotten gems. My favourite song from the album is her cover of Bette Davis Eyes, which is the perfect soundtrack for a slow morning.
Crisps and Proscuitto: I’ve been craving this salty snack since the second I saw it on Instagram
😬 Not convinced:
Skirts over trousers trend: if you can pull this off, just know I’m insanely jealous
Glambot: this hilarious critique by Lauren from Fangirling summarises my thoughts perfectly
Following TikTok recipes: I decided to follow an aesthetic baking tutorial from TikTok last week, however the results were far from what I imagined. While I ended up with a pretty delicious batch of blueberry muffins, my kitchen was a mess and the speed and stress of pausing the tutorial meant I forgot to add the vanilla. (Oops)
🛍 Payday wishlist:
Jewellery box: if anyone has good jewellery box recommendations, please let me know! One I’ve currently got my eye on is this gorgeous patterned box from Daisy Jewellery
I’ve also been looking everywhere to get my hands on this Barilla heart pasta in the UK
